Roots before Fruits, my 2025 jewellery business mantra
Yes it’s a cheesy phrase, but it basically means do NOT spend time trying to get press or meet a journalist or hound the buyer from Net a Porter if you haven’t got the foundations of building a jewellery brand covered:
FOUNDATION STAGE
The foundations are the roots of your business. You need to have a distinctive design handwriting, have thoroughly researched the market, and understand what makes you different. Who are you selling to? Why should we care about your jewellery in a sea of sameness?
CORE STAGE
The core is the trunk of your jewellery business tree. It’s essentially taking the strong brand roots you’ve created, and applying them outwards to different parts of your business to get sales. Photography, different selling platforms, speaking to buyers, being disciplined on social media, understanding SEO, a cohesive website design…all of things are at the CORE stage of your growth.
EXTRA STAGE
The extras are the apples on the tree. The icing on the cake. There is no point hosting an expensive event if your work isn’t distinctive and the price point is wrong, or you’re not connecting to your target audience. Please please please don’t spend precious money on these EXTRAS before doing the hard work of the foundation and core stages.
